3 Things to Expect at a Coaching Session
Life coaching is fairly new on the landscape.
People aren’t really sure what it is yet or why coaching might help them in the midst of busy lives, kids, work and home.
Coaching is for anyone!
Coaching is not counseling and coaching is usually quite affordable.
Getting your own life coach is an exciting addition to your healing team, health goals, personal growth needs or just every life things!
But what happens in a coaching session?
What will you talk about?
What will you work on?
How do you spend that hour with a coach?
How is it different from an hour of counseling?
Some people come into a coaching session with a set goal. They know what they want to work on and what in their life needs a little coaching.
Some people are even more specific to overseas life challenges, neurodiversity needs or career ministry help. They know I have experience and training in those areas and come for those specific reasons.
Some people aren’t sure why they’re there, they just need someone to talk to, a sounding board for all the things.
Some people are ready for personal growth, someone to ask them questions and help them grow.
Some come for one thing and within a few minutes, realize they’re there for a completely different reason.
Coaching is unique and beautiful and a great way to test the waters of building your healing team, asking for help, reaching out and asking someone to walk with you through whatever the challenge might be right now.
What happens in a session?
Regardless of why someone connects for coaching, there’s going to be 3 main pieces to the session. We’re going to connect, get to know your story, and talk for a few minutes.
Then…
1} I’m going to ask you a question. “How can I help?” That might lead to a bunch more questions and me saying, “Tell me more about that.” How can I best help with this challenge or need? How can I coach, challenge, encourage, and pray for you in this season?
2} I’m going to ask if you journal, how you journal, what you journal and then, we’re going to talk about the best way to start journaling. Even if you don’t journal or like writing, there’s ways you can get thoughts in your head down onto paper, or screen, depending on what you prefer. We’ll talk about that. Journaling is an incredibly important part of health, growth, learning and healing.

3} I’m going to give you homework. A book to read, a list to make, a call to make, a youtube to watch or podcast to listen to. I’m going to ask that you write down your homework, or take a picture of my random notes during the session, so that you know what to do between sessions. I’ve been known to draw pictures, make charts and scribble on paper or a whiteboard to illustrate a growth point and learning moment. Or, I might ask some questions that you aren’t sure how to answer or need time to think about. That’s homework. I’ll follow up on those things during the next session.
That’s it!
We’ll cover those three things, specific and unique to you. You’ll have a chance to share, talk, work through whatever is on your mind. We’ll find growth areas and how to take steps forward.
I’ll be there to coach and guide you through the process!
